Welcome to our website (“Site”), innovation4justice.org, operated by Innovation for Justice at the University of Arizona and University of Utah. We are committed to protecting your privacy. This privacy policy ("Privacy Policy"), which is part of our Terms, applies to information that personally identifies you (“personal information”) collected on our Site. This Privacy Policy incorporates by reference the privacy policies of the University of Arizona and the University of Utah.

This Privacy Policy governs your use of our Site. By using our Site, you agree to the collection, storage, processing, and use of your personal information as described in this Privacy Policy. We may modify this Privacy Policy at any time by posting a revised version on our Site or, if we determine appropriate, by sending you an email or other notice. Please review this Privacy Policy from time to time because your continued use of our Site after a modified Privacy Policy has been posted indicates your consent to the Privacy Policy.

This Privacy Policy describes our policies and procedures with respect to personal data collected, held, used or processed by us when you use the Site. It also covers the measures taken to protect the confidentiality, integrity and security of that personal data; and your rights, including a right to object, regarding such personal data. (All references herein to “include” or “including” shall be deemed to mean “include without limitation” or “including without limitation,” as the case may be.)

Queries regarding how (1) our policies may apply to your personal data; (2) to exercise your right to question or object to our use of your personal data, in accordance with applicable laws; or (3) to access, correct, or delete your personal data, should be sent to Innovation for Justice using the contact information set forth below.

Who controls the data we collect?

We are a data controller with respect to your personal data. We “control” the data you submit to the Site and make certain decisions as to how to use and protect it, but only to the extent that we have informed you about such use or as otherwise permitted by applicable law.

Please note that the University of Arizona or University of Utah (collectively, “the Universities”) may be independent controllers in their own right, separately determining how to use and protect your personal data according to their Privacy Policies and Terms of Use.

What Personal Data We Collect

We collect personal data from individuals who visit or use the Site.

Automatically Collected Data

When you visit our Site, certain information about your use of our Site is automatically collected. This information includes your domain name and host for Internet access; the Internet address of the site from which you came; the date and time of your access; your computer’s IP address and information about its operating system, browser and host; the date and time you access our Site and the pages you visit.

Much of this information is collected through cookies, web beacons, and other tracking technologies, as well as through your web browser or device (e.g., IP address, MAC address, browser version, etc.). The tracking technologies employed when you use our Site may be first-party or third-party. We use these tracking technologies to better understand how our Site is being accessed, used, and its overall effectiveness. This information may also be used in the targeted distribution of promotions (through such platforms as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and via Google Ad Words) on behalf of our charitable work, in our grant making process, website optimization decisions, to improve the user experience of our Site, and to communicate with you, including to respond to your inquiries and fulfill your requests.

Our Site uses Google Analytics, a third-party website analytics tool that collects automated information about visitor traffic. The information collected by Google Analytics is transmitted to and stored by Google and will be subject to Google’s privacy policies. You can learn how Google collects and processes data and how to opt out of tracking of analytics by Google.

If you do not want to receive cookies, you may set your browser to reject them. However, if you turn cookies off, you may not have access to some of the Site’s services and features. We also may allow third parties to issue cookies, pixels, web beacons and other tracking technologies on our Site to help us compile aggregated statistics regarding the operations of our Site.

Data Collected from Social Media

When you interact with the Site through a social media platform, we may collect the personal information that you make available to us on that page, including your account ID or username and other information included in your posts.

Do Not Track Disclosures

Some browsers have incorporated Do Not Track (“DNT”) preferences. As there is not yet an industry-standard DNT protocol on how to interpret DNT signals, we do not honor DNT signals from browsers at this time. However, you may refuse or delete cookies to prevent tracking activities.

Information About Other People

If you provide information to us about any person other than yourself, you must ensure that they understand how their information will be used and disclosed, and that they have given their permission for you to disclose it to us and for you to allow us to use and disclose it as set forth in this Policy.

Why We Collect and Process Personal Data

We process the personal data described in this Policy for the following purposes:

  • where you give us consent:

    • by means of cookies and similar technologies in accordance with the information below and the information provided to you as to when those technologies are used; and

    • for the purposes we explain at the time you give us such consent;

  • to detect and prevent breaches of policy and violations of law;

  • in connection with legal claims, and to comply with applicable laws, regulations, subpoenas, legal process, governmental investigations, regulatory requests or inquiries or professional codes of conduct, including:

    • to cooperate with government or law enforcement authorities conducting an investigation; and

  • as otherwise described in this Policy and the Universities’ policies.

  • From time to time, we may need to process personal data on other legal bases, including:

    • with your consent; or

    • if it is necessary to protect the vital interests of a Site user or other data subjects.

Marketing

We do not use your personal data for direct marketing purposes. If we ever decided to do so in the future, we would first obtain your express consent, which you would be free to withhold, and which you would also be able to withdraw at any time by contacting us as set forth below.

How and With Whom do We Share Personal Data

Your personal data will be accessible by Innovation for Justice and the Universities. In addition, we may share your personal data as set forth below:

  • with service providers, suppliers and subcontractors in connection with our provision of the Site; 

  • with analytics and search engine providers (i.e., Site usage data) that help improve and optimize the Site;

  • if we transfer ownership of the Site or contract with another entity to update the Site, in which case we may disclose your personal data to the prospective counterparty in such transaction and such data may be one of the assets transferred in such transaction;

  • to comply with applicable laws, regulations, subpoenas, legal process, governmental investigations, regulatory requests or inquiries, to cooperate with law enforcement, to assert or defend legal claims, to protect our and others’ rights, property, or safety, and for the purposes of crime and fraud prevention and remediation;

  • to persons acting in a fiduciary or representative capacity on your behalf;

  • to your agents, advisors, and representatives; and

  • to any other party with your consent.

Your Rights

You have various rights with respect to our use, processing and sharing of your personal data, as described below. There may be exceptions to these rights under applicable law. If you wish to contact us to exercise any of these rights, please email us at info@innovation4justice.org.

We will not deny you services, provide a different level or quality of services or otherwise discriminate against you just because you exercised any of these rights; however, if you decline to provide your personal data or ask us to delete it or stop disclosing it, we may be unable to provide you with certain services.

Only you, or a person who you authorize to act on your behalf, may make a request related to your personal data. The request must:

  • provide sufficient information for us to reasonably verify you are the person about whom we collected personal data or an authorized representative of such person; and

  • describe your request with sufficient detail that allows us to properly understand, evaluate, and respond to it.

We cannot respond to your request or provide you with personal data if you do not take the foregoing actions. We will use personal data provided in a request only to verify your identity or authority to make the request.

  • Access: You may request a copy of the personal data that we have collected, used, shared, or sold about you, and why we collected, used, shared, or sold that personal data, including the categories of personal data collected, the specific items of personal data collected, the categories of sources from which we collected personal data, the purposes for which we use the personal data, the categories of third parties with whom we share the personal data, and the categories of information that we sell or disclose to third parties.

  • Accuracy: We aim to keep your personal data accurate, current, and complete. We encourage you to contact us to let us know if any of your personal data is not accurate or changes.

  • Objecting/Deletion: You have the right to object to processing of your personal data and to ask us to block, delete or restrict your personal data subject to certain exceptions. Once we receive your request and verify your identity, we will delete your personal data from our records and, if applicable, direct our service providers to delete your personal data from their records, unless an exception applies under applicable law.

  • Portability: You have the right to request that your personal data be provided to you, or to another data controller, in a commonly used, machine-readable format.

  • Complaints: If you believe that your data protection rights may have been breached, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the applicable supervisory authority.

How Long We Keep Your Personal Data

We will retain personal data for as long as required to provide the services to you.

Where we process personal data to comply with our legal obligations, we will retain the data for as long as required by the Universities’ policies or as otherwise required under applicable law.

California’s Shine the Light Law

California Civil Code Section 1798.83, known as the “Shine the Light” law, permits users who are California residents to request and obtain from businesses a list of what personal data (if any) they disclosed to third parties for direct marketing purposes in the preceding calendar year and the names and addresses of those third parties. Requests are free of charge. We do not use your personal data for direct marketing purposes, and we do not share your personal data with third parties for their direct marketing purposes.

Children Under Age Thirteen

Our Site is not intended for use by children under the age of thirteen. By using our Site, you represent to us that you are at least thirteen years old. If you are not at least thirteen years old, you may not use our Site. We do not knowingly collect personally identifiable information from children under the age of thirteen. If we learn that we have inadvertently collected any personally identifiable information from a child under the age of thirteen, we will delete that information.
